Description

; Survey volume K3 is the third in the series of four 'K' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Ely, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Smith & Watkins, Messers. Pickering & Smith, Messrs. Smiths & Gore and Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the Ely Chapter Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on the following dates: 25 March 1869 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 8 October 1869 by Order in Council; and 3 November 1896 (published in the London Gazette by Order in Council). ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Ely Capitular Estates were re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation by exchange on 8 October 1869, 3 November 1896 and 20 May 1904. These Estates were then transferred back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as Chapter Late Permanent Estates (under the under Cathedrals Measure 1931) on 29 September 1935 (effective date), published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 16 August 1935.; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Cambridgeshire, parishes of Cambridge All Saints, Cambridge St. Edward, Cambridge Holy Trinity, Cambridge St. Mary the Great, Cambridge St. Michael, Coveney, Downham, Elm, Ely Holy Trinity, Ely St. Mary, Melbourn, Sutton, Meldreth, Witchham, Newton, Stuntney, Swaffham Prior, Hauxton, Great Shelford, Impington, Mepal, Stapleford, Wentworth, Witchford, Cottenham, Foxton and Grunty Fen (extra parochial); the county of Huntingdonshire, parish of Bluntisham; the county of Suffolk, parishes of Stoke near Ipswich, Lakenheath, Melton, Martlesham, Winston, Bromeswell and Debenham, Woodbridge and Ufford; the county of Norfolk, parishes of Oulton, Downham Market and Pulham St. Mary Magdalene; the counties of Cambridge and Norfolk, parish of Outwell; and the city of London, Christ Church (Newgate Street) and Holborn St. Andrew.
