Calendar of the subscription book, covering the period 1604-1692

This book measures about 8¼" by 6" by 1", is bound in a limp parchment cover, now wrapped in paper, inscribed 'Subscriptions from 1st July 1604 to 4th Febr 1692 (M)' (actually the first subscription, that of Francis Killingbeck, is of 1 Oct. 1604, and the book continued in use after John Foord subscribed on 4 Feb. 1692-3) and consists of 98 ff. of paper (having, apparently, no water-mark), the last twenty of which are blank. The remainder contain subscriptions, in most cases not, it would seem, those of beneficed clergy, on licence or appointment in Lewes Archdeaconry; but it is unusual, before the Inter-regnum, for the occasion of licence to be stated. It may be assumed that dates of subscription and licence coincide, save in the case of the 48 entries dated 3 or 4 July 1635, when omissions brought to light by the Archbishop's Visitation of that year seem to have been made good.

The earliest subscriptions are to three Articles concerning the Royal Supremacy, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Thirty-nine Articles respectively; where the undertaking in the second to use no unauthorised service is excluded I have assumed, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, that the subscriber is being licenced as a schoolmaster, and indicated them by SM; 'schoolmaster' in full being reserved for those cases where he is expressly described as such. L or E before the reference to the original folio indicates that the declaration is in Latin or English. After the Restoration, conditions become more exacting; James Mitchell, for instance, besides assenting to the Three Articles (or rather to two and two-thirds), promises fidelity to King George, abjures 'the damnable doctrine and Position that princes excommunicated by the Pope . . . may be deposed or Murthered ..', denies the doctrine of transubstantiation, and rejects the Pretender.

The names of notaries and others witnessing subscription are included; and are distinguished by the date, or extreme dates, of each following the name instead of preceding it.

The frequent notes of dates of ordination increase the value of the book; but it is as well to bear in mind, in view of the contradictory statements about the Orders of William Aylworth, the possibility of scribal errors.
