The following records were deposited in the Archives Department in August 1984 by Mr. H. Astley, General Secretary of the National Association of Powerloom Overlookers, through Manchester Polytechnic Archive Retrieval Project.

The Association began in November 1865 at Pendleton as the Pendleton Powerloom Overlookers' Mutual Assistant Association. The Third Annual Report, 1871, declared 'This Society is not a trades' union, and we do not acknowledge strikes'. However, by 1882 payments were being made to strikers at Bury.

With the opening of more branches the Association was re-named the National Association of Powerloom Overlookers in 1879.

Branches were opened at Manchester, in 1867 (closed 1932), Stockport, 1867 (closed 1967), Swinton, 1867 (closed 1963), Heywood, 1872 (closed 1895), Rochdale, 1872 (closed 1887), Wigan, 1873, Bedford Leigh, 1875 (closed 1894) Bradford, 1876 (closed 1903), Bury, 1877 (closed 1887), Ashton under Lyne, 1878 (closed 1880), Hadfield, 1880 (closed 1887), Rochdale District, 1880 (closed 1885), Littleborough, 1880 (closed 1882), Whitworth Vale, 1880 (closed 1885), Failsworth or Newton Heath, 1881 (closed 1883), Bacup, 1881 (closed 1882), Farnworth, 1882 (closed 1967), Ramsbottom, 1883 (closed 1887), Openshaw and District, 1889, renamed Droylsden and Gorton, 1907 (closed 1973), Walkden, 1895 (closed 1972), Newton Heath, 1896 (closed 1966), Halstead, Essex, 1910, Macclesfield, 1918, East Anglia, 1948, Aston in Makerfield, 1953, Central (Tiverton and Sherbourne), 1965, Manchester, 1966 and Skelmersdale, 1969 (closed 1978)

The Manchester Branch was formed in 1966 from the amalgamation of the original Pendleton Branch and Newton Heath. The Walkden members were transferred to Manchester in 1972, and the Droylsden Branch joined Manchester in 1973.
