Immediate source of acquisition

Howell estate records transferred by the Archivist to London County Council from a deposit of records by Messrs. Pennington & Son, 64 Lincoln Inn Fields, W.C.2. (The presence of the records for Tregony is explained by this, cf. CRO BRA/1076)

(1). Family Pedigree and Notes on Personalities includes

Extracts from Pedigrees of connected Families, especially Haweis.

Notes by Mrs. R.H.C Howell (nee Buller), Mrs. M.B.Howell (nee Heywood) and Mr. C.A.Howell on members of the Family, with dates.

Documents purporting to show descent from Joseph of Aramathea through the Welsh Kings.

(2). The Hornby and Wynne Families.

(Eliza Hornby, descended from the Hornby and Wynne Families, married Richard Buller, Rector of Lanreath. His Daughters married into well-known Cornish families, Rhoda Harriet Caroline marrying Francis Howell of Ethy.).

Papers include "The Family and Times of Governor Hornby", collected by Mrs. R.H.C.Howell. (He was Governor of Bombay about 1770-84). Also "A History of the Parish of LLanegryn", by W.W.E.Wynne of Peniarth (Lord Lieutenant of Merioneth).

(3). Papers relating to the Revd. Joshua Howell.

(Coming from Wales, he was educated at Christ Church, Oxford. He appears to have come to Cornwall as Curate of Looe, then Vicar of Pelynt, then Vicar of Morval, then Rector of Lanreath until his death. He was at first badly off, partly because of the difficulty of collecting Tithes. However, he married Dunnett Haweis, heiress to property in central Cornwall; this property was sold and property in the Looe-Lanreath-Pelynt-Lansallos area purchased. He had several children and he died a wealthy man).

(He was the Son of Joshua Howell, who purchased a Commission for him in the 16th, Light Dragoons. He rose to the rank of Captain. He spent much of his time in London and Bath and was well known in high Social Circles).

Cheque book counterfoils and Bank pass book. These show a number of wagers and loans, including someto Members of the Royal Family.

Letters from him to his Sister "Tammy" (Thomasina)..

A letter to him in connection with a Tenancy.

A copy of his Will, and a letter with details of his Estate.

(5) Papers relating to the Revd. John Francis Howell.

(He was Vicar of St. Gluvias and a Canon of Exeter Cathedral).

(He was a younger Son of Joshua Howell. He was married but appears not to have had any children.)

A large collection of Indentures and relevant papers relating to Property transactions of the Howell and Haweis Families; the earliest being one of the time of Charles II.

(7) Papers relating to David Howell of Trebursye, and letters addressed to him.

(He was the Son of David Howell of Lanlawren. He lived for many years at Trebursye, but sold it in 1842 and bought Ethy in 1843. He married Frances Russell in 1821. He died in 1845).

Two small diary books ("Commercial Ledger") 1821 and 1822.

Papers received as High Sheriff 1822.

Political letters (Incl letters from Sir John Molesworth and Jonathan Couch), pamphlets and addresses to the Electors of Launceston. (He stood as a Liberal or Reformist in the Election of 1832, but was narrowly defeated by Sir Henry Hardinge).

Lengthy papers concerning a Case in Chancery (Howell v. Howell) concerning the administration of the Will of James Howell (the Eldest Son of Joshua Howell).

Letters from Lord Monson.

Letters concerning Trebursye, mostly from Lord St. Germans.

Letters 1841-45 from his Son, Francis Howell, from Canada and Boston.

(8) Papers relating to Francis Howell of Ethy.

(Francis Howell was the eldest Son of David Howell of Trebursye; his Brothers were Russell Howell and David Hehry Howell. After leaving Christ Church, Oxford, he went out in 1843 as Private Secretary to Sir Charles Metcalfe (Later Lord Metcalfe), Governor-General Of Canada. Sir Charles' elder Brother, Sir Theophilus Metcalfe, had married the Sister of Frances Russell).

(He was the eldest Son of Francis Howell. His Brother, Llewellyn, died at Lahore in India. The youngest Brother, C.A.Howell, survived him and lived at Ethy until his death).
