The collection contains portraits of the Bourne and Shepherd photographer Colin Murray (1840-1884) and his wife Jane Borthwick (1831-1885), both of whom died of cholera in Calcutta, Colin's brother Kenneth Murray (1831-1901), also a photographer with Bourne and Shepherd, and their brother Donald (1834-1882), a tea planter in Darjeeling and his wife Helen Isabella (1847-1911) and children Norman, Alister and Donald. The McRitchie family portraits are mainly of Jane Borthwick Murray's sisters. After the deaths of Colin and Jane Murray, their children were initially placed in the care of the Rev Dugald McKichan, who was the husband of Jane's sister Eliza, and the collection also includes portraits of these relatives.
