Administrative / biographical background

'Instant Salvation', which was written by Geoffrey Reeves, edited by Irene Bailey, and produced by Charles Parker, was broadcast on the BBC Third Programme in 1964. The opening credits describe the programme as 'a consideration of some aspects of Moody and Sankey and of modern evangelism'. It begins with a history of the American prayer meeting revival in the nineteenth century, discussing the careers of Dwight Lyman Moody, Charles Grandison Finney, and Ira David Sankey, concentrating particularly on their visits to England and Scotland and featuring extracts from their speeches and writings. It goes on to consider modern evangelism by interviewing various people from the church and universities; they talk about the evangelical movement, including the notion of personal salvation and the role of music in the church.

Interviewed for the programme were: John Aldiss, Rev. Henry Bryant, Clive Barker, Tom Dreiberg MP, Canon Stanley Evans, Brian Green, Stuart Hall, Professor Richard Hoggart, Ewan MacColl, Rev. Ernest Marvin, Canon Douglas Rimes, Peggy Seeger, and Dr Leslie Weatherhead.

The readers were Clive Barker, Colin Campbell, Patann Fairfort, Michael Custow, and Brian Murphy. Additional material was written and performed by Charles Lawson.

A sequel, 'Blessed Assurance', is catalogued as MS 4000/6/1/35.
