Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)
-
This circuit began as Manchester (Grosvenor Street) United Methodist Free Church Circuit, re-named Manchester 2nd UMFC (Oxford Street) Circuit in 1869. Churches belonging to the circuit were: Ancoats Beswick Street UMFC, Ardwick Hyde Road UMFC, Bradford Albert Street UMFC, Oxford Street (later Oxford Road) UMFC, Glazebrook Temple UMFC, Greenheys UMFC, Hazel Grove UMFC, Hulme Chapman Street UMFC, Hulme Great Jackson Street UMFC and Levenshulme UMFC. After the Methodist Union of 1907, the circuit became Manchester (Oxford Road) United Methodist Circuit. Two churches from Manchester (South) MNC Circuit were added in 1917: namely Altrincham ex-MNC (ref: C18/19) and Boston Street ex-MNC, Hulme (ref: M319/4). It continued after Methodist Union in 1932 (and is not to be confused with Oxford Road ex-Wesleyan Circuit), but gradually its churches were closed or moved to other circuits until it was left with Oxford Road ex-UMFC and Beswick Street ex-UMFC. The circuit was dissolved in 1949 and the two remaining churches moved to Manchester (Withington) Methodist Circuit, but closed soon after.
