Gallantry Notes: War Diary 121 Coy: "On the morning of the 26th October 1916, about 9.45am, Pte C Powell observed that a gun position was being heavily bombarded by heavy Trench Mortar shells and that a direct hit had been made on this position. He immediately, on his own initiative rushed up into the sap head and there found that the gun had been blown off the emplacement and was buried in the trench and that the men on the gun had both been seriously wounded and partially buried. He at once assisted the wounded men and then dug out the gun. While Pte Powell was getting the gun out, he was blown down the side of the crater but returned and succeeded in recovering the gun. During the whole of this period Pte Powell was exposed and in full view within 100 yards of the enemy and under a heavy trench mortar bombardment.;

Private Christopher Powell was born in Limerick, and enlisted into the Royal Munster Fusiliers. He was killed in action France and Flanders 26 March 1918, whilst serving with the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry).
