HA 507 AND OTHER COLLECTIONS OF HERVEY RECORDS

The Hervey family and estate records have been deposited in the Record Office over a number of years and as a result are split into five collections, of which HA 507 is the largest. The list below indicates which collections are most likely to yield information on different subjects.

(1) Manorial. Some material in HA 507/1 but most of the records of the Hervey family's manors are listed at E7/23.

(2) Deeds of title. Virtually all the deeds of title of the Hervey estate are in HA 507/2; there are some stray items at 429/1-2 and 941/82/1-11.

(3) Estate administration. Virtually all surviving records are in HA 507/3. There are some maps at 1167, 1-14 and other items at 429/5-23 and 941/82-83.

(4) Trusts and settlements. All relevant material is in HA 507/4.

(5) Probate. All relevant material is in HA 507/5.

(6) Family and personal. The bulk of the family's correspondence and personal papers is in accession 941, with some material in HA 507/3 and 7.

(7) Ickworth House. A little material in HA 507/9 but most is in accession 941.

Administrative / biographical background

The bulk of this collection comprises the deeds of title to the estates of the Hervey family, Earls, later Marquesses, of Bristol, and the records created by the process of administering those estates. The deeds are arranged, generally speaking, to show the way in which the various portions of the estate were built up.

In 1873, according to the Return of Owners of Land, the Bristol estate comprised:-

(1) 16,953 acres in East and West Suffolk, mostly in West Suffolk, with Ickworth park as its nucleus. Ickworth had been in the family since the fifteenth century. Two of the largest additions to this estate came in 1808 with the acquisition of the Little Saxham estate and a third part of the Davers estate. The East Suffolk estate, in and around Playford, came through Elizabeth, second wife of the first Earl of Bristol, as heiress to her father Sir Thomas Felton, and through Mary, Lady Hervey, mother of the second Earl of Bristol, through her mother Mary Lepell (nee Brooke).

(2) 13,732 acres in Lincolnshire, in and around Sleaford. This estate came to the family through the marriage in 1688 of John Hervey to Isabella, daughter and heiress of Sir Robert Carr, bt.

(3) 1,131 acres in Essex, mainly in Great and Little Chesterford. The estate was acquired in 1748 on the partition of the estates of the Earls of Suffolk; Elizabeth, second wife of the first Earl of Bristol was heiress to her mother who was in turn a co-heiress of the third Earl of Suffolk.

(4) 157 acres in Sussex, mostly urban property in Kemp Town, Brighton. This was purchased by the Bristols from 1829.

There was in addition the family's London house, 6 St James Square.
