Mary Chamot was born in Russia near St. Petersburg. She studied fine art at the St. Petersburg Academy then, after leaving Russia in 1918, at the Slade School of Art. She worked as a relief lecturer at the National Gallery and at the Victoria and Albert Museum (from 1924 to 1939). Skilled in languages, she was Russian interpreter for the Allied Commission in Vienna (1945-49) and an Assistant Keeper at the Tate Gallery from 1949 to 1965. Her other books include `Gontcharova' (Paris, 1972).
