Petition for a warrant to form Philanthropic Lodge, No. 107, King's Lynn sent by George Scott, Worshipful Master; William Wood, Senior Warden; John James, Junior Warden, Peter Young, Past Master and John Hill, Secretary from Lodge of Perseverance, No. 294 [SN 1290], meeting at the City of Norwich, All Saints, Norwich, Norfolk. Sent on behalf of Michael Alexander Gage, proposed Worshipful Master and Charles Smyth, proposed Senior Warden, former members of Lodge of Perseverance, No. 294; Daniel Mathews, proposed Junior Warden, former member of Lodge, No. 660, Dublin, Grand Lodge of Ireland; Samuel Southgate, proposed Senior Deacon, former member of an unnamed Lodge, No. 167 [SN 792], Norwich; John Ruddiman, proposed Junior Deacon, former member of St Stephen's Lodge, No. 192, Edinburgh, Grand Lodge of Scotland; William Robinson, proposed Tyler, former member of Domatic Lodge, No. 234 [SN 1060], London and Thomas Varley, former member of Lodge of Perseverance, No. 294 [SN 1290], Norwich, to meet at the White Hart Inn, Kings Lynn, Norfolk. The officers of Lodge of Perseverance, No. 294 [SN 1290] inform the Grand Secretary of a spelling mistake on a membership certificate which should read Michael Alexander Gage not Page; return a certificate for [William] Trory for signature by the Grand Secretary and send seventeen and a half Guineas for the warrant and expenses and twelve Guineas for a set of jewels.

Administrative / biographical background

Philanthropic Lodge was granted a warrant on 22 March 1810 by the Antients' Grand Lodge to meet as No. 142B. The Lodge was constituted on 14 May 1810 while meeting at the Maid's Head Inn, Tuesday Market Place, Lynn, [sometimes called Lynn Regis and now known as King's Lynn] Norfolk. After the Antients' and Moderns' Grand Lodges formed a union to meet as the United Grand Lodge of England, the Lodge was renumbered in 1814 to meet as No. 172. The Lodge was renumbered in 1832 to meet as No. 124. In 1863 the Lodge was renumbered on the last occasion to meet as No. 107. The Lodge has met in many inns and taverns around King's Lynn but now meets at the Duke's Head Hotel, King's Lynn.
