Description (What the record is about)
-
The political papers consist of a single bundle of items arranged in straight-forward chronological sequence without any division into sub-classes. Undoubedly the most important item is JER/HBY/232/1, which appears to be a selective letter book, a sort of political testament, kept by Leonard Troughear, later second Baron Holmes. Correspondents include many of the major Whig figures of the day, Shelburne, Rockingham, Townsend and Portland. Of more local interest is a rare canvass book of Isle of Wight voters for the 1790 Hampshire County election giving their supposed allegiances, JER/HBY/232/2. There are additional odd items relating to the management of the boroughs of Yarmouth, Newtown and Newport.
