Maharaja Balwant Singh of Benares (1739-70). Mughal (perhaps at Benares), c.1810. Presented by the Maharaja of Benares, 1911. Inscribed on border above in red 'nasta'liq':' Maharaja Balwant Singh Bahadur.'. Gouache with gold; pale blue border decorated with flowers. 254 by 190 mm; page 425 by 335 mm. Listed: Foster (1924), no.218. The maharaja rides a dark brown horse, accompanied by retainers who carry a sword, shield, sunshade, lance and a 'chauri'. He wears a long white jama and has a green and gold halo. Note: The style of the floral border and the painting itself suggest that this is the work of a Delhi artist who may have visited or taken up residence at Benares. Probably the picture is from a set of portraits of the rulers of Benares which would account for the fact that the style is not contemporary with the reign of Maharaja Balwant Singh.
