Marriages
Until Act of 1753, Catholic marriages generally recognised as valid in law.
Many Catholic marriages were technically invalid, but great care was taken to ensure that the weddings of the wealthy were properly registered. Often they were entered in the parish register; when the incumbent got his dues he was generally willing to make the official entry, and after 1753 two ceremonies were arranged. (Marriage Act of 1753 declared null and void any marriages not in Anglican church with banns or licence). Marriage Act of 1836 made marriage in a Catholic or Dissenting chapel in presence of registrar legal.
Baptisms
In early days: "if a child were not baptized in church a fine of £100 was due, and for a clandestine burial a fine of £ 20. Yet Catholics continued to be bap. mar. & bur. by their own priests".
So apparently sometimes in church registers and sometimes not.
