Description

Deep red Morocco leather covers, framed, in gilt, the initial J in the centre of the front board, marbled end papers, plum, black, gold & white, gauffered edges, the centre has become detached from its elastic ribbon; white watered silk, on the verso of front marbled covers.

The first leaf, inscription illuminated on vellum, surmounted by the coat of arms of the Overseers of the Poor (blue): the wording reads:-

At a Meeting of the Overseers/for the Township of South/Manchester, held at the Vestry/Hall, Stretford Road on Friday/the 14th March, 1902, it was/unanimously resolved:-

The verso, blank white board, then the second leaf with hand coloured illuminated frame bears the continuation of the text of the first leaf, the capitals are illuminated in gold leaf, Mr. Charles Jennison's name being written in large script & each capital of his name surrounded by gold leaf:

1.6 : holds as a Councillor of the City of Man-/chester, ....

1.8 : .... recent election as an Alderman of

1.9 : the County Council of Lancashire.

1.10 He was appointed an Overseer for the South

1.11 Manchester on the formation of the

1.12 Township in 1896, prior to which date he

1.13 had long filled a similar office in Gorton,

1.14 and West Gorton.

1.18 For the past two years Mr Jennison has

1.19 presided over the Meeting of the

1.20 Overseers .......

1.21 .... and on his retirement.

Verso, blank white board.

The third leaf, also vellum, is framed by a double hand painted border, in blue & brown, this bears the signatures (20) of the members of the board, also the autograph of Chief Clerk, Geo. F. Tatton. Dated April 1902, the verso blank & the recto of the rear end-paper is also of white watered silk.

Measurements, board 27cm x 22.3cm; linen leaves 25.4cm x 19.3cm.

Each leaf has been affixed to the centre by white tape, the lower edge of the first leaf, lower 1.h.c. G. FALKNER & SONS. INV.ET.DEL, to the right, MANCHESTER & LONDON.
