PHOTOGRAPHS AND DOCUMENTS RELATED TO THE FAMILY OF LILY GOLDBERG

The donor, Lily Goldberg (nee Rosenfield), was born in Manchester 61 years ago; her family lived in Masonic Street off Oldham Road. Her father, Harry Rosenfield was a tailor's presser, he came to England from Russia at the age of 10. Harry Rosenfield's father was a glazier, he lived in Bent Street and used to go knocking on doors looking for business; he walked around with a frame on his shoulders. The donor's father had brothers Abraham and Sammy and sisters Annie, Dora and Rose.

Lily Goldberg's mother Annie (nee Benjamin) was one of 6 children, her brothers and sisters were called Joe, Maurice, Fanny, Sarah and Abraham. Their father was a Rebbe and synagogue Shammas in Leeds.

The donor married Reuben Goldberg in 1941 at the Manchester Great Synagogue, Reuben was serving in the R.A.F. at the time. They had known each other since childhood when they lived in the same street.

Reuben Goldberg's father, Benjamin Pesach, was born in Russia in 1878, he died in Manchester in 1969. His father, Semach Goldberg, was shot at the border whilst trying to escape from Russia. Benjamin Pesach Goldberg had a half brother, Abraham Pellas who went to the U.S.A., and became a customs officer.

Reuben Goldberg was born in 1912 at 212, Oldham Road, Manchester. Reuben was one of 7 children:-

David Goldberg who died about 9 years ago worked as a clothing cutter and then became a traveller in confectionery. He emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1926 and didn't return to England until 1953 when he came for a visit.

Esther Goldberg worked as a dressmaker at Roland & Rifkind's in Mumford Street; they were famous theatrical costumiers. She now lives in Rectory Green, Prestwich.

Annie Goldberg died in a flu epidemic in 1934.

Maurice Goldberg (died c.1975/76) was a watchmaker by trade. He married Edwina Cowan and they lived in Blackpool. They had 3 children:- Judith, their only daughter, married Rabbi Greenstein, an American Reform Rabbi, and they live in the U.S.A.; their eldest son Graham, died in a climbing accident 3 years ago, while their youngest son is now Rabbi Geoffrey Goldberg, a Reform Rabbi in the U.S.A..

Joseph Goldberg, a textile salesman, married Linda Sassoon and they live in Didsbury. Their daughter Ann, is a school teacher.

Sidney Goldberg worked for a French West African firm as a representative and was honoured by the French government for his work for French industry; he now lives in Rectory Green, Prestwich.

The donor's husband's parents, Benjamin Pesach Goldberg and Sarah Goldberg (nee Dodlson) were married in Russia, they arrived in England shortly after their marriage.

The donor and her husband Reuben had 3 children. Their eldest daughter, Janice, is a school teacher, she married Charles Bloom, a barrister. Their daughter Myra Goldberg is a nurse, she married David Verber, an accountant. Jacqueline, the youngest daughter, was a school teacher, she died in 1974.

The donor and her husband Reuben Goldberg, remember several Jewish families living in the Oldham Road area of Manchester. Living near the donor were the Jacobsons (Mr. Jacobson was a cobbler); the Brodies and the Hershovitch's who sold coats and dresses; the Ellis family lived in Butler Street and the Coppitch family in Oldham Road. Also on Oldham Road lived the Baker family who sold furniture; the Stross's garage and hardwear store; the Rosemarines gown shop and Melrose, the cobbler. In Butler Street there were also the Rosensweigs and the Herwicks (who were clog makers). On Rochdale Road was Forman's the chemists.
