The diocese of Chester was one of the earliest to set up a conference, the Chester Diocesan Conference being established in 1870. Conference comprised three elements, the bishop, the chamber of clergy and the chamber of ality and its duty was to deliberate on all matters concerning the Church of England in the diocese. It was abolished in 1970, having been overshadowed by the Diocesan Council (later Synod) set up in 1967 (see EDM 30).
