Administrative / biographical background

Thomas Greg (1758-1834) who purchased the Coles, Knights Hill and Tillers End estate at Westmill between 1784 and 1825 was a Belfast merchant and shipowner, as well as a considerable cotton-spinner at Quarry Bank Mills, Styal, Cheshire. The growth of his Westmill estate is charted by the Land Tax returns which show a payment of £12 in 1784 increasing to £91.9.0d in 1831. Thomas Greg does not appear to have resided at Coles, which was occupied by his eldest son, Thomas Tylston Greg I, from 1784 until his death in 1839. There seems little doubt that the volumes described below, which were found in a barn at Westmill, belong to Thomas Greg's shipping and mercantile activities
