The Mayoress' Holiday Fund for Children was established in 1925 by the mayoress, Mrs. David Lythall Hewitt, to provide a week's holiday in the country or at the seaside for a number of children from Chester's elementary schools. From 1948 to 1953, the fund provided for convalescent treatment for a number of children. Provision for holidays which had been suspended for the period 1940-51, resumed in 1952.
