Administrative / biographical background

Under the Bristol Corporation Act of 1897, part of Barton Regis Poor Law Union, including its workhouse at Staplton, was incorporated in Bristol. A new workhouse, to serve the rural areas of Barton Regis Union, was built in 1902 at Southmead. Two years later this too was brought into Bristol and the Barton Regis Union dissolved. Southmead Workhouse was appropriated for use as a general hospital, dealing with medical, surgical and maternity cases, under the Public Health Act of 1930. Since 1948 it has been the centre for the Southmead Group of Hospitals
