Description

38 A highway called the Hollowe Lane in Hunton and Yalding, leading from Coxheath to Yalding, has been in a bad state of repair for the last twelve months, which road should have been repaired by the inhabitants of Hunton from Coxheath to the stream running from Buston in Hunton, and the remainder by the inhabitants of Yalding, during the last summer.

[In margin] James Michell, Christofer Ippembury, Henry Gregory and Grancis Hunt of Hunton appeared, acknowledged it and their fines assessed at 12d. each. Therefore discharged. And Robert Hayman, Edward Grenestreete, Richard Grenestrete and Thomas Hale similarly appeared.

39 A certain ditch in Yalding extending towards the highway between Yalding Leas and Loddenford Bridge, since 1st February, 1599/1600, has been filled with clay, mud and other filth, so that the said highway is flooded. Which ditch should be cleaned out by Edward Grenested of Yalding, broadweaver, by reason of his tenure.

[In margin] His penalty fixed at 12d. for each rood (virgate) not cleared, by statute [18 Elizabeth, cap. X]

Badgers Authorized.

Orders made at the General Sessions of the Peace at Maidstone, 1st April, 1600.

1 Order made by Thomas Baker and Thomas Robertes that the corporal punishment of Robert Russell be remitted, but that the money unpaid under the order be delivered to the churchwardens of Staplehurst, and Robert Russell to continue weekly payments according to the order until the next sessions at Maidstone, when the order may be altered if further evidence is produced, when the parishioners of Staplehurst would be required to return the money.

2 A House of Correction to be erected at Dartford in lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, to be furnished, governed, ordered and maintained by such officers and by such contribution as are set forth in a special book of orders and rules made therefore, exhibited under hands of Sir Thomas Walsingham, knight, and other justices, which are here ratified.

3 Penalty of £5 imposed, at sessions at Maidstone, on 25th September, 1599, on the inhabitants of Ashford, if they did not repair Ashford Bridge, not to be levied, but process continued against the inhabitants of the ville of Ashford and hundred of Chart, except such as traverse it. Inhabitants of Longbridge hundred to be discharged, because it is a distinct hundred from Chart. Inhabitants, which shall be brought in by process, to be well fined.

[Note added] The first order concerning the bridge is enrolled in Christmas Sessions, 1598, the second order is in the calendar of sessions at Maidstone, September, 1599.
