Tarvin Poor Law Union was the successor to Great Boughton Poor Law Union which was formed in 1837 following the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. Great Boughton Poor Law Union originally consisted of 101 townships in the counties of Cheshire and Flintshire. Twelve townships were transferred to the newly created Hawarden Poor Law Union in 1853 and a further thirty were transferred to Chester Poor Law Union in 1871. Following the latter transfer of townships, the union was renamed Tarvin Poor Law Union. It was abolished following the Local Government Act of 1929 which transferred the functions of the poor law guardians to county and county borough councils working through public assistance committees.
