Administrative / biographical background

The United Mariners Lodge No. 30 works under a warrant dated 1777 but the lodge worked in London from 1753 to 1777 as No. 23. In 1776 this warrant was lost and reasons why it was lost appear in the minutes of the Atholl Grand Lodge. In 1777 their warrant was renewed by Grand lodge, still bearing the No. 23. These minutes prove that the lodge worked continuously up to 1777 and did not as it has been suggested become extinct prior to that year. After receiving their renewed warrant the lodge met at the Rosemary Branch, Rosemary Lane, London. From 1787 to 1807 the lodge met in Wapping, which was considered the Port of London. This meant that many members were seafaring men, so in 1794 the lodge adopted the name United Mariners Lodge. The lodge now meets at Freemasons' Hall, Great Queen Street, London.
