ARNEY FAMILY PAPERS

This compact collection relates to the Arney Family and the properties (or, at least, deeds of properties) accumulated in their own right or by inheritance from related families. The family is to be found in Badgworth from at least the mid 17th cent, the date of the earliest deeds in the collection. William (d.1776) married Joan daughter of Philip Parker of Weare and their family became heir to the Parker properties in Weare upon the death of Joan's brother, John, without issue. Edward Arney, (d.1823), son of William and Joan, continued to live at Badgworth where he served in various local offices (see DD\AN 50), but died at Weare (see DD\ED for his will) leaving his nephew, John, as his main heir. This John was followed by a son and grandson of the same name, the last of whom died in 1889, leaving his brother, Edward, as his heir. Edward married Eliza, daughter of Henry Banwell of Batcombe Farm who had been responsible for the various purchases of Mark properties comprised in this collection, (see esp. DD\AN 19). Thus the whole archive group descended to Edward's son, A B Arney, who was living at Batcombe Farm up to his death in 1962 and who bequeathed these records in his will to the Somerset Record Office. The accompanying pedigree records all families significa represented in this collection through their relationship to Arney.
