The Millers Mutual Association was founded in 1929 to rationalise the flour milling industry. Members were assigned an annual flour quota or 'basic datum'; millers who made less flour that their quota were entitled to compensation whilst those who made more had to pay a fine; milling firms could sell their quota to the association or to another firm. Firms could also sell their mills to the association, leading to the closure of the mills and dismantling of the machinery. The quota system was abandoned in 1959 due to the Restrictive Trade Practices Act 1956, although the association continued to purchase and close mills. The National Association of British and Irish Millers was founded in 1878. It was usually referred to as NABIM (later stylised "nabim"). In 2021 it changed its name to UK Flour Millers.
