Sermons of Hugh Owen (1761-1827), Archdeacon of Salop. Undated; witten on paper watermarked 1804 (eg. ff. 42, 208, 247). Hugh Owen was educated at St. John's College, Cambridge (B.A. 1783, M.A. 1807). He became Vicar of St. Julian's, Shrewsbury, 1791; Prebendary of Salisbury, 1803; presented to a portion of the vicarage of Bampton, Oxon. in 1819; Archdeacon of Salop 1821; Prebendary of Lichfield 1822; Minister of the royal peculiar of St. Mary's, Shrewsbury, 1826. He is best known for his history of Shrewsbury. ff. 1-26. Sermon on Genesis 3:9. Numbered 353. ff. 28-53. Sermon on 2 Samuel 12:7. Numbered 354. ff. 55-80. Sermon on Matthew 15:25. Numbered 355. ff. 82-107. Sermon on Luke 18:9-10. Numbered 356. ff. 109-134. Sermon on Matthew 6:3. Numbered 357. - Each sermon originally a separate fascicule within covers of heavier paper; now bound together, interspersed with blank leaves. Quarter leather binding with boards covered in dark cloth, 216 x 182 mm., 19th century. Number at base of spine: 29.
