Administrative / biographical background

Winsley Sanatorium for Consumptives was founded in 1903 and placed under the joint control of the Bristol, Bath and Wiltshire authorities with trustees and a Board of Governors.

In 1948 upon the establishment of the National Health Service it was controlled by the Bath Hospital Group Management Committee. In 1974 it came within the Bath Health District of the Wiltshire Area Health Authority and in 1977 it ceased to be a hospital for tubercular patients.

The records are exceptionally complete, with most groups of documents beginning before the 1920s.
