The gas industry was nationalised in 1949 under the Gas Act 1948. The Southern Gas Board was one of 12 regional bodies which took over all the existing private and municipal gas undertakings in the country. The Gas Act 1972 merged all the area boards into the British Gas Corporation.
In the 1970s natural gas from the North Sea replaced the coal burning process.
