The Choir Benevolent Fund, a friendly society, was founded in 1851 for organists and lay clerks connected with cathedral and collegiate choirs, and for the relief of their widows and orphans. The fund received subscriptions from members, but they also appealed for support to all with an interest in choral worship. During the nineteenth century the Fund ran festival concerts for musical entertainment and fund raising purposes and a prominent concert was held at St. Paul's Cathedral in 1877.
