This small booklet contains a list of almost nine hundred books in the Bodleian library, written in Payne's hand, on one of his characteristically octavo-sized notebooks.
The books are listed in an author-index in alphabetical order under the following subject headings "De Scientiis" (p.2 entries crossed out); "De Gramatiea & linguis" (p.3 entries are crossed out); "De Geometria & Mensuris" (p.7); "De Musica" (p.9) "De Astronomia" (p.11); "De Astrologia" (p.13); "Astronomia" (p.15); "De Prospectiva" (p.17) "Tractat. Philosoph Miscell etc" (p.19) "De re militari" (p.28) "Polit" (p.29); "Geometria" (p.31); "Astrologia" (p.33). On p.39 is a list as follows: "Geomet, Arithmet. Optica. Mechanica. Architectontica. Polemica. Studica." A leaf has been cut out between pp. 2 and 3, and another between pp. 34 and 35.
This item provides insight into the books that Payne was accessing and what may have influenced his own working.
