Administrative / biographical background

(Note supplied by the City Librarian of Sheffield: On the death of Sir Godfrey Copley of Sprotbrough in 1709 the Yorkshire estates passed to his relative, Lionel Copley of Wadworth. His sole surviving child, Catherine, married Joseph Moyle of Bake, Cornwall and for almost two generations this family had no links with the northern estates. When Lionel Copley died, however, in 1766, Joseph Moyle, son of Catherine, became possessed of the Copley estates and assumed the name of Copley, later receiving a baronetcy. His son and successors resided at Sprotbrough.)
