Stephen Bright of Carbrook (1583-1642) was employed by the Earl of Arundel and Surrey as bailiff and collector for his Sheffield estates. The accounts include Ecclesall, of which Bright purchased a lease from the crown. His son, Colonel (afterwards Sir) John Bright was Commissioner for sequestering the estates of delinquents in the West Riding during the Civil War, High Sheriff of Yorkshire 1654-56 and one of the Commissioners for the West Riding for disbanding the army, 1660-61. He married (1) Catherine Lister (née Hawksworth) (2) Elizabeth Norcliffe (3) Francis Vane (née Liddell) (4) Susannah Wharton. His heir was his grandson John Liddell, who assumed the surname of Bright (d.1737). His son Thomas left a daughter Mary as his sole issue and heiress. She married the 2nd Marquis of Rockingham in 1752. The accounts of the Bright estate are thereafter recorded with the Marquis's estate accounts
