Description

The records consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence of the Political Residency, Bushire. The volumes are bound in subject compilations. The records are as follows:. IOR/R/15/1/119-144: subject compilations, 1850-1855; IOR/R/15/1/145-179: subject compilations, 1854-1863; IOR/R/15/1/180-182: native letters sent, 1856-1872; IOR/R/15/1/183-192: subject compilations, 1852-1900; IOR/R/15/1/193-194: political diaries, 1883-1894; IOR/R/15/1/195-198: subject compilations, 1887-1918; The political diaries contain political intelligence and related information sent to Bushire by Agents and other British representatives around the Persian Gulf, arranged in diary-entry format. The volumes of native letters sent contain drafts of letters in English together with Arabic and Persian translations from the Political Resident to British Native Agents, Persian officials, and members of ruling families, as well as to merchants, British Indian subjects and others.

Arrangement

From about 1850 until the 1880s, when a modern file system was introduced, correspondence of the Political Residency, Bushire was bound in subject compilations. Until 1862 the volumes still have Book Numbers, although it is not clear when the material was bound up, and some volumes are obviously an amalgamation of papers which were originally kept separately. For the next twenty or thirty years there are a number of series ('Old Records', 'Old System', Political Diaries'), whose record keeping was clearly not very organised (IOR/R/15/1/183-198). Some of these continue after 1889 and the beginning of the subject files.
