The estate was assembled by purchase by William Hesketh Lever between 1888 and 1911. It comprised 2 main blocks of property:-
a. The Manor of Thornton Hough and other premises in Thornton Hough which were parts of the Mostyn estate in Neston, put up for sale by auction in 1849;
b. The Storeton estate originally part of the Massey family estate, acquired by Sir Thomas Brocklebank, and purchased by Lever after the former's death in 1911.
