Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume N3 is the third in the series of three 'N' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Hereford, which were vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume contains surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the Hereford Bishoprick Estates, which were vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 23 April 1868 by vacancy. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Hereford Episcopal Estates was re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 25 March 1880 (date effective), which was published in the London Gazette on 20 August 1880. These estates were then later transferred back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as Bishopric Late Permanent Estates (under the Episcopal Endowments and Stipends Measure, 1943) on 1 April 1946 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 19 April 1946 by Order in Council.; The volume also added annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Herefordshire, parishes of Little Marcle, Much Marcle, Breinton, Bosbury, Hampton Bishop, Bridstow, Ross and Brinsop; the counties of Gloucestershire and Herefordshire, parish of Lea.
