M.C. London Gazette 1 January 1917: ‘Temp. 2nd Lt., attd. M. Gun Co.’

‘Nigeria 1918’ is unique named to an officer in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

Thomas Daniel Harvey was born in Douglas, Isle of Man, and enlisted into the Royal Army Medical Corps in September 1914, a dentist by profession. Promoted to Corporal in February 1915, he was discharged from the 70th Field Ambulance R.A.M.C. on 21 March 1915, having been granted a commission in the 12th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He served in France from 23 May 1916, and was wounded whilst serving with the Machine Gun Company at Pozières on 3 August 1916, with shrapnel wounds to the left wrist, left thigh and right Os Calcis, these being considered small and superficial. He was, nevertheless, repatriated to England and was on medical leave until 6 September.

Harvey was awarded the Military Cross without citation in the 1917 New Year gazette but he clearly felt that this was for his work at Pozières, these details being inscribed on his award. According to his obituary in The Isle of Man Times it was awarded ‘for conspicuous bravery in handling his machine gun whilst in a position of grave danger.’ He was transferred to the West African Frontier Force in September 1917 and attached to the Nigerian Regiment. Whilst serving in Nigeria in 1918, he died of influenza at Zungeru on 17 October and is buried in the cemetery there.

WO339/38666: died of influenza at Zungeru. NOK: RD Harvey (father),Inglewood,Queen's Promenade, Douglas, Isle of Man.
Served MGC 11/3/1915 - 24/9/1917 before embarking for duty with WAFF. (reported to 36 Coy 31/5/1916)
Medical report on the last illness of Lieut T D Harvey, WAFF: "I deeply regret to report that Lieut TD Harvey died at the Europoean Hospital at Zungeru, of influenza on October 17th 1918 at 3.10pm. He was taken sick on the 8th instant at the beginning of the 9influenza epidemic and his condition was aggravated, I am afraid by the fact that he was "gassed" before he came to Nigeria, in connection with the overhauling of some gassing apparatus. The most troublesome syptoms were a very troublesome cough and persistant high temperature. These symptoms however did not cause a great deal of distress as the continuous temperature caused a certain amount of stupor from early in the disease. This condition increasded as the disease went on and he appeared to suffer correspondingly less as time passed. For the last two days he was in a semi concious condition and did not appear to suffer any marked discomfort. On the night of the 16th instant he fell into a deep quiet sleep and this continued until 3am. The next day his breathing became quicker, but not distressed. This condition lasted only ten minutes and he ceased breathing quite suddenly. His end was thereful quite calm and peaceful and during the course of his illness, his torpid condition and the influence of drugs spared him any particular discomfort. His passing is a great loss to the Station as he was deservedly highly popular amongst all classes. He was very keen on sports and entered with vim into all that was going on and was always cheerful and entertaining companion. His loss is acutely felt by all who knew him, but he will live long in our memories as a gallant officer and gentleman who has not hesitated to risk his life fearlessly when ever called upon to do so, and who paid thye toll uncomplainingly in this unforetunate epidemic which has had the whole station in its grip for the past two weeks. He was an excellent patient and during the time when he could think clearly, he was always solicitous about the welfare of his fellow suffers and took his own troubles lightly as was his wont. He was buried on the day he died, with military honours, and all the Europeans who were not sick attended the funeral at the European Cemetery. Signed GR Twomey, Senior Medical Officer, Zungeru, 22 Oct 1918."
