Description

This series comprises records relating to the Trustees of the Streetway and Wordsley Green, and Wolverhampton and Cannock District of Roads (also known as the Trustees of the Wordsley-Green and Wolverhampton Road; the Trustees of the Streetway and Wordsley-green and Wolverhampton and Cannock Road).

Richard Timmis, Timmis & Woodcock, Richard Woodcock, Harris & Edmunds and Nock and Chase all seem to have been severally concerned with the Trustees; however their exact relations are obscure. It seems likely that at various times the partnerships were appointed surveyors to the Trustees, and may also have subcontracted the repair works and collection of tolls from the Trustees. They seem also to have inherited the records of earlier surveyors to the Trust.

A turnpike road, ie one barred with a toll bar or "turnpike", was a main road or highway on which tolls were collected, these tolls being levied on animals and wheeled vehicles and used for the maintenance of the road. The first turnpike road, in Camb
