John Robert Daniel Tyssen third son of William George Daniel, who changed his name to Daniel Tyssen on his marriage to Amelia Tyssen. His father was Lord of the Manors of Hackney and his son lived in Hackney, and served as the Steward. He built up an extensive collection of books, manuscripts and documents relating to the history of Hackney, which was known as the Tyssen Library. After the donation to Hackney Parish in 1882 it was lodged in the New Town Hall and added to by the Tyssen Librarian, being transferred to the new Central Library in 1908.

The collection served as the nucleus for Hackney's local history and archive collections. Currently it has been divided. Prints and drawings are included in the visual collection. Although no correspondence survives it is likely that Tyssen actively commissioned local architects and artists to record scenes and buildings that were shortly to disappear. The book collection is in the course of inclusion in the local history book collection at the time this list was compiled. Many unprovenanced maps and plans have been included in the Department's 'V' sequence; and the balance of the collection is listed here.

The original list was supplemented in 1984 and 1988 by additions transferred from the library collections. This relisting is intended to provide more detail and facilitate greater indexing to the collection. No changes have been made to numbering.
