Ted Atkins, an engineer by profession, joined the RAF's Mountain Rescue Service in 1979, leading the first RAF ascent of the North Face of the Eiger. In 1983 Atkins made his first visit to the Himalayas. He was a member of an eighteen month Joint Services Expedition to Brabant Island, Antartica. He was involved in an unsuccessful attempt on Mount Everest (West Ridge) with the Joint Services Everest Expedition in 1988. He led the successful RAF Mountain Rescue Expedition to Mount Everest (North East Ridge) in 2001
