Ms diary (56pp) kept during his service with the 14th Madras Infantry during the Third Burma War, February-May 1887, containing some interesting remarks about Burma and its people, as well as providing a good picture of the problems which the Burma Expeditionary Force had to overcome; together with two ms diaries (154pp and 34pp) and a ts diary (121pp) covering his service in the United Kingdom as a staff officer in the 66th Division stationed at Crowborough, Sussex and Colchester, Essex (July 1915 - April 1917), transfer to the secretarial staff of Lord Milner's Committee for Russian Supplies (May 1917-June 1918), and then active service with the North Russian Expeditionary Force (June 1918-January 1919), containing his criticisms of Britain's coastal defences, war correspondents and the country's politicians, especially Asquith, Churchill and Lloyd George, instructive remarks concerning Russia's position in the war and Zeppelin and Gotha raids on Britain, and after his arrival in Russia, descriptions of the chaotic conditions at Murmansk and Archangel alongside critical comments on the character of the Russian people. Also held with the collection are miscellaneous papers and photographs relating to the North Russian Expeditionary Force, 1918 - 1920.
