Description (What the record is about)
-
He had the honour of Hill's of the 22nd of last month and has now sent Mr. Powys and Co's, Bill for £250 payable 21 days after that date, for which he asks Hill's note or receipt.
He has ordered the seats (?) for the Dunge to be painted and begs pardon for improperly calling them "skreens" which is the name they commonly pass by there.
Hill has already declared Mr. Davies' £1,000 mortgage belongs to his nieces. Chambre will send the like declaration touching Mr. Sherrard's £1,600 mortgage when Mr. Dicken comes up. Till then Hill's letter is sufficient to make that sum a credit of his nieces. The writings of Mr. Davies and Mr. Sherrard are laid up at Hawkestone, amongst those belonging to the young ladies.
He sends the inclosed bill for he cannot meet with a suitable mortgage or security for it. He can sometimes lay out a £100 upon bond "but that way of dealing I know you dislike the wee frequently doe it here". He had heard nothing of the paying in of Lord Kilmorrey's money. Surely Hill will abate the interest, as he had done for the Fletchers and Mr. Baylyes. Others will press the like or pay in their debts, for interest in at £4. 10. or even £4 rather than £5. Mr. Shepheard their countryman, who possesses a large personalty of the late Sarjt. Hall, has furnished lately Mr. Owen of Condover with a large sum at £4. 10. and by his people offers his money all over the district at such rates.
Mr. Robert Adams excuses himself for not calling upon Hill on the ground that he has not a rent-roll for that estate, as it now is, but Chambre finds he has been instructed in this, for without naming Saunderson or Wilson, whom he surely means He says that this estate is worth £11,000. Chambre believes the rents are at present about £300 p.a. but the buildings are ruinous and there is not sufficient timber on the estate for repair. The tenants are all hardly racked, saving one lease, Chambre is satisfied that Wilson rates it thus unreasonably on purpose to keep in unsold - when sold his profits cease, for he is then receiver of the rents.
Chambre has written to Mr. Adams Hill need not be troubled until Adams was better informed - when he was truly informed Hill or his agents would treat with him and use him like a gentleman.
On Monday last he waited on Mr. J. Hill at Hawkestone who promised to tell Hill what they did.
Postscript. The weather is bad again.
P.P.S. Chambre's sister Waring had paid off her husband's mortgage. She desires Hill to assign it in trust for her; otherwise, if her son dies, strangers may reap the benefits of her industry.
