Thomas McKenny Hughes was Woodwardian Professor of Geology from 1873 till his death in 1917 and helped to lay the foundations of modern geological surveys. He was author of the Cambridgeshire volume in the Cambridge County Geographies, and was also a noted archaeologist and twice President of the Cambridge Antiquarian, Society (see Proc. CAS, xxi, 103-4). These papers derive from his membership of the Council of the Cambs & Isle of Ely Chamber of Agriculture, of which he was Vice-Chairman in 1902 and Chairman in 1903-4. The Chamber was evidently founded in 1870, only five years after the Central Chamber modelled on those in France.
