Administrative / biographical background

The Library was founded in 1830 as a subscription library for French, German and Italian literature. At the end of the century interest declined due to the "indifference of the public" and its "love for serials and periodicals".

The books were purchased by the Public Libraries Committee in 1903, forming the nucleus of a Foreign Library, which has since been absorbed into the Language and Literature Library of the Central Library.

There are articles on the Manchester Foreign Library in The Manchester Librarian, Oct. 1922, by A. F. Jones, The Manchester Review, 1950, by W. H. Shercliff, and The Bulletin of the John Rylands University Library of Manchester, vol. 71, No. 3, Autumn 1989, by Lyn Shepherd.
