Administrative / biographical background

W H L (Bill) Smith joined Lewes Post Office in 1936, having worked at Brighton from 1929. He was acting Head Postmaster for the Lewes area between 1970 and 1972; the service was reorganised in 1972, and his position disappeared. Lewes was no longer a Head Office, and the area which it formerly covered was split between Brighton and Eastbourne. Bill Smith moved to a senior position in Eastbourne before his retirement.

Publication note(s)

The History of the Post Office in Lewes (AMS6488/13) was compiled from his research into local postal history by his son-in-law, Dr Stephen Orchard.
