W H L (Bill) Smith joined Lewes Post Office in 1936, having worked at Brighton from 1929. He was acting Head Postmaster for the Lewes area between 1970 and 1972; the service was reorganised in 1972, and his position disappeared. Lewes was no longer a Head Office, and the area which it formerly covered was split between Brighton and Eastbourne. Bill Smith moved to a senior position in Eastbourne before his retirement.
