30a and b Cliff High Street and 2 and 4 South Street

In 1587 James Fawden sold a house and two gardens to Abraham James. It was still held by the James family in 1752 (now two houses and shoe-maker's shop) when it was sold by Thomas James, clerk, to William Tooth who mortgaged it to William Stanford in 1755. In 1761 Tooth sold it to Thomas Cruttenden and the mortgage was assigned by Stanford to Charles Gilbert, gent. In 1766 the latter purchased the property and then sold to Henry Freeman, grocer, on whose death in 1822 it passed to his son John. He then sold to William Phillips in 1846 who mortgaged it to George Molineux, Thomas Whitfeld and others. In 1865 Whitfeld conveyed it to George Martin and on his death in 1902 it passed to his brothers Frederick and Albert Martin who then sold to William James.
