Description (What the record is about)
-
The poet Sa'di (d.1291). Mughal, c.1770. Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807. Inscribed above in Persian: 'tasvir-i hazrat-i shaykh sa'di shirazi' (a picture of Shaykh Sa'di of Shiraz). Drawing; on an album page with outer mauve gilt-sprinkled border. 101 by 75 mm; page 378 by 255 mm. Sa'di is seated at the foot of a tree resting his bearded head in his hand and holding a book, listening to a youth in a seventeenth-century Persian turban who kneels playing a stringed instrument fitted with a single gourd. A human head features in the rocky prominence of the landscape behind. Note: The style of drawing is very similar to and could be by the same hand as J.1, 21. The subject is a traditional one; another version is Add.Or.358; 'see also': Kuhnel (1922), pl.49; Kuhnel (n.d.), pl.13.
