Description (What the record is about)
-
The files in this series concern notes on certain historical sources of the XVIIth and XVIIIth century.
The first five files contain notes on manuscripts held in libraries and private collections. The location of the source is recorded, and its reference number (if known).
Files six, seven and eight contain notes on a variety of manuscripts and modern publications relating to the Arts in England in the XVIIth century; and specific monarchs/figures, George III (reign 1760-1820), George IV (reign 1820-1830); the diarist Richard Symonds (1617-1660), and his account of the First English Civil War.
This research informed Millar's understanding of the cultural background of the XVIIth and XVIIIth century, helped trace attributions and understand relationships between artists, patrons, collectors, monarchs, diarists and notable figures of the day. He was interested in England's international relations with other countries and journeys abroad taken by Englishmen and nobility.
