Branch records

This section comprises papers relating to some of the local Indian Workers Association branches in England and Scotland that were functioning during the 1980s and 1990s. It also includes a copy of a volume of minutes of meetings of the South Staffordshire branch, based in Wolverhampton, dating from the late 1950s and early 1960s. This was one of the first branches to be re-established in the post-war period.

Material largely consists of correspondence and reports on branch activities, together with some flyers and branch circulars. There are also minutes for meetings of the Birmingham branch, Southall branch, and Wolverhampton branch. Most files also contain lists of branch executive committee members.

The papers of the Birmingham branch are comparatively more extensive, and include some financial records from the 1980s and a typescript article on decolonisation in Congo, dated 1960. These papers are likely to be more substantial because Avtar Jouhl continued to take an active role in branch activities during the 1980s and 1990s although he did not hold office for most of this period.

Branch records described at MS 2141/A/8: Papers of the Indian Workers Association provide evidence for the activities of several local branches during the 1960s and 1970s, including the majority of those represented in this section.
