Southampton Women?s Centre was formed in the 1970s. During its early years it was based at ?run down houses provided by the City Council, first at Ordnance Road, then Empress Road and then 1A Bevois Hill, Portswood?. City Council approved a refurbishment of the Women?s Centre in 1986, which would provide office space, creche facilities, a kitchen and counselling rooms with disabled access. The constitution of the Southampton Women?s Centre describes its aims and objectives: ?To provide a women-only environment in which services and facilities can be offered to all women, regardless of race, class, disabilities, sexuality, age, education, marital status, religion, political affiliation or any other distinction, and to enable them to achieve their full potential. For the purposes of this Association, a woman shall be defined as a person who sees themselves as a woman and is living full-time as a woman?.
