- Previously access was via a card index (this also covers CEC copy deeds sereis CEC/6/1). The cards are arranged alphabetically in order of parish within preferment. Cards are made up in two ways. At the top of the card is written the preferment and below it is written the parish or manor. In one arrangement the last party to the deed and the number of the file holding the papers on the transaction have been written immediately beneath, while at the bottom of the card is entered the number in the sequence of volumes of the volume of copy deeds that holds the deed, the registration number of the deed and the series of deeds in which it is held - Ecclesiastical Commissioners for England (ECE) or Church Estates Commissioners (CEC). In the other arrangement, which is seemingly used only for ECE copy deeds, more than one deed has been listed on a card, the information being set in three columns, name of last party, deed number and file number.
- References to this series also appear as CD references in the benefice card index.
